Brief Introduction of the Department:
The Department of Zoology is one of the pioneer departments of the university. It started with the establishment of the university itself on July 18, 1946. The founder Vice Chancellor, Dr. Harisingh Gour, invited Dr. D. S. Shrivastava from Agra University to start the department. He was a Reader and Head until 1951, when he left for Belfast (UK) for research work. Dr. Panna Lal Mishra from Lucknow joined the department as Reader and Head (1951–1953). Dr. D. S. Shrivastava came back in 1953, took over as Professor and Head in 1955 and continued until his retirement in 1968. Prof. Har Swaroop joined the department as a lecturer in 1947, he left the department in 1960 and joined Vikram University, Ujjain (M.P.), as Professor and Head, later he became Vice Chancellor of Jiwaji University, Gwalior (M.P.). Prof. H. N. Bhargava joined the department in 1948, he retired in 1985. Prof. R. S. Saini joined the department in 1949 and retired in 1985. Dr. S. D. Mishra joined the department in 1951, later in 1967 he left and joined Jodhpur University, Rajasthan. Prof. R. K. Shrivastava was the first M. Sc. of the department joined the department in 1949, he retired in 1988. Prof. H. K. Saxena, Dr. D. D. Soni, Dr. S. K. Tiwari, Prof. B.K. Shrivastava, Prof. Y. N. Sahay, Prof. D. P. Gupta, Prof. A. K. Raizada, Prof. S. Sahai, Prof. O. P. Gupta, Prof. Sunita Bhargava, Prof. Smita Banerjee, Dr. V. S. Bais, Prof. D. K. Saraf, Prof. U. S. Gupta, Prof. Mangla Bhide, Prof. Janak Dulari Ahi, Prof. Subodh Kumar Jain (FIAN, FNASc), have been working in the department. Presently, Prof. Versha Sharma (Dean-SBS), Prof. Shweta Yadav (HoD), Dr. Malabika Sikdar, Dr. Payal Mahobia, Dr. Deepali Jat, and Dr. Raj Kumar Koiri are working in the department as permanent faculty members.
Over years the department has developed comprehensive collaborations with Zoological Survey of India and has been pursuing cutting-edge research in areas of top national priority. The department has a core strength of faculty members trained in advanced scientific biological research at institutes of national/international repute. The renewed focus of the department presently involves biochemistry, earthworm biology, endocrinology, environmental biotechnology, molecular systematics, and neurobiology.
