About Department

Vedic Studies is a newly established department under the School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences at Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, vide UGC sanctioned letter no. -1/2013 (CU) Vol -XVIII dated 14-11-2019. Department has two permanent faculties.


Brief History of The Department

The Department of Business Management was established in the year 1982. Prof. R. B. Saxena was founder Head of Department. This Department occupies a place of prominence in the realm of professional management education. This Department toiled to earn the distinction of being the first institution in the state of Madhya Pradesh to offer a two years full-time MBA Programme which is duly approved by AICTE.

Glorious journey of the Department of Commerce commenced since 18th July 1948 on separation from the Department of Economics led by an eminent authority of Commerce named Professor Amar Narayan Agrawal who was invited from University of Allahabad (U.P) to develop Commerce as academic branch of knowledge. The Department with its continuous nurturing gave another branch of relevant knowledge “Department of Applied Economics and Business Administration” which later renamed as Department of Business Management is second Department under the ages of School of Commerce & Management-SCM. The Growth & Development of this Department emerged on a magnificent platform by its hardworking faculty members who have adopted out of box thinking and dedication towards the University as well as the Department. The Department is leading in academic contributions in the form of popular text book writings in Hindi and English by faculty members, Research Grant under DRS, Major & minor Projects by Faculty, faculty Participation in National-International Association conferences, Presentation of Research Papers, Recipient of Research Awards in the National Academic forums, Visiting lecture, Creating innovative ideas including own academic responsibility of Teaching of UG & PG.

About the Department:-

The Department of Law made its humble beginning in the year 1946 when the University of Saugor became functional. It is the oldest Law Department in Madhya Pradesh. It is indeed a matter of great privilege for the Department of Law that the founder of the University, Doctor Harisingh Gour, M.A., D.C.L., LL.D. (Cantab.), D.Litt., D.sc. , Member of the Inner Temple, Knight  Bar at - Law and member of Constituent Assembly. He himself was a renowned lawyer, great jurist and social reformer.


Brief Description of the Department

The Library Science education in the University began in 1962 by granting affiliation to A.E.C. Training College, Pachmarhi M.P., up to the year 1995 to run the Bachelor and Certificate Courses in Library Science exclusively, for the Armed Forces. T.R.S. College, Rewa has also been affiliated to this university for several years. The present department of Library & Information Science was established in 1970 on the occasion of centenary year of Dr. Harisingh Gour, the founder of the University and its first Vice Chancellor. The department started functioning in the University Central Library building and moved to the current location having its separate building in the year 1989. It has been imparting regular Graduate Degree Programme in Bachelor of Library & Information Science since its inception, and Post Graduate Degree Programme of Master of Library & Information Science since 1983 and Ph.D. programme of study since the year 1987. The Department was functioning under the Faculty of Arts till 2008 and subsequently, reorganized to function under the School of Arts & Information Sciences (AIS) in the year 2009. It has adopted CBCS semester system since 2009. The Department has carved a niche in enriching its students to secure placements in prominent national level institutions over the past years. Many stalwarts of Library and Information Science such as Prof. H.S. Sengar, Prof. R.G. Prasher, Prof. K.C. Sahoo, Prof. Jagtar Singh, Dr. B.P. Shrivastava have served this Department. The Department under the dynamic leadership and contribution of teachers has achieved its own place within the country.


About the Institution

Institute of Engineering and Technology (IoET) is  an AICTE approved Engineering  Institution under the umbrella of Dr. H. S. Gour   University, Sagar,  
formerly University of Saugor, was established on 18th July 1946 by Dr. Sir Hari Singh Gour (Nov. 26, 1870 – Dec. 25, 1949) by his lifetime savings. Besides, various schools of study and departments the Institute of Engineering and Technology is the one which is newly established in the university campus by the year 2022.
IoET offers various undergraduate degree courses of various field of engineering like Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Fashion and apparel Engineering, Food Technology Engineering, Computer Sciences Engineering, Dairy Engineering. This institute is located at down hills of Dr. H.S. Gour University Sagar.




Course Introduction

The Technology of Teaching course helps future educators build a strong foundation in how teaching itself can be improved through research-based methods and thoughtful strategies. Rather than simply focusing on gadgets or classroom tools, it explores the principles, psychology, and planning that make teaching more organized, effective, and meaningful.

Spread across Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday sessions, the course mixes interactive discussions, real-life examples, and micro-teaching practice to help students learn how to set clear objectives, plan lessons, connect curriculum goals, and evaluate their own teaching.

By the end of the course, students won’t just “teach”—they’ll be able to design engaging, student-focused learning experiences that can work in any type of classroom.

  1. Explain the concept, scope, and importance of Technology of Teaching in modern education.
  2. Distinguish between Technology of Teaching and Technology in Teaching with examples.
  3. Apply learning theories (behaviorist, cognitive, constructivist) to plan effective instruction.
  4. Design well-structured lesson plans based on Bloom’s Taxonomy and Gagné’s events of instruction.
  5. Analyze teaching methods and select appropriate strategies for diverse learners and subjects.
  6. Demonstrate micro-teaching skills (e.g., stimulus variation, reinforcement, questioning techniques).
  7. Evaluate teaching effectiveness through formative and summative assessment techniques.
  8. Create a sample teaching module integrating research-based teaching practices.

Course Introduction:

The course "Basics of Pedagogy" provides a foundational understanding of the art and science of teaching, equipping future commerce educators with essential pedagogical skills and principles. As an integral part of the ITEP program, this course bridges the theoretical underpinnings of education with the practical aspects of teaching and learning processes, particularly in the context of commerce and business education.

Learners will explore key concepts such as the nature of teaching, learning styles, instructional strategies, classroom communication, and learner-centered approaches. The course emphasizes reflective teaching, inclusive practices, and the role of the teacher in facilitating meaningful learning experiences in diverse classroom settings.

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the course aims to empower student-teachers to become transformative educators who can adapt pedagogical strategies to meet the needs of 21st-century learners in both school and higher education settings

By the end of this course, student-teachers will be able to:

Brief Introduction of the Department :

The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar occupies a significant place in the area of Indian archaeology. It has adequately Contributed to research on Archaeology and History of India in general and Madhya Pradesh in Particular and brought out a number of scholarly publications. During the session 1951-52, a non Teaching department known as “Department of Archaeology” was opened for the archaeological Excavations. The excavations were carried out at the site of Tripuri (District Jabalpur, M.P.) and Sirpur (District Raipur, Chhattisgarh) under the Direction of Dr. M.G. Dixit , the then Head of the Department. During the session 1958-59, a full –fledged teaching department denominated as “Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology” came into existence and Prof. K.D. Bajpai, a distinguished scholar of archaeology was appointed its Head. Presently Prof. Nagesh Dubey is the Head of the Department.


About Anthropology Department 

The anthropology department has been actively involved in academic and research in the field of Physical/ Biological and Social-cultural Anthropology. It came into existence in July 1957 from its mother department viz. Anthropogeography. Currently, the Department is headed by Prof. Ajeet Jaiswal. The department museum is one of the jewels of the university.
The department is jewelled by six renowned faculties who are known for their contribution to the discipline viz. Prof. K.K.N. Sharma, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gautam, Prof Ajeet Jaiswal, Dr. Soniya Kaushal, and Dr. A. Bijyayasundari Devi. They specialize in the varied fields of biological and socio-cultural anthropology.
The Department is credited with various research books and research papers in various national/international journals and is also actively involved in organizing various National and international conferences/symposia/seminars. Under the scheme of global initiatives of the academic network (GIAN), the Department has organized 3 programs and hosted international faculty from the USA and Poland. 


A Brief History of the Department

In 1950, UNESCO realized the significance of the teaching of Criminal Justice at the College and University levels in Asia, and in 1955, a consensus emerged in a symposium held in London. University of Saugor (Sagar) responded to that consensus first and as a result, the Department of Criminology was established on 18th  July 1959 largely due to the initiative taken by Shri D. P. Mishra, (the then Vice Chancellor, 1956-1962, and later Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh).  The former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice G. P. Bhatt was appointed as its first regular Professor and Head of the department. After some years, Forensic Science was added and it became the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science.

The Department of Criminology and Forensic Science is running two different courses under the School of Applied Sciences. The department is involved in teaching Criminology and Forensic Science at the graduate and postgraduate levels leading to M.A. in Criminology and M.Sc. in Forensic Science respectively along with the research facilities for Ph.Ds. in both the disciplines. The department is recognized as a DST-FIST-sponsored department. The contributions of the department are various and remarkable in teaching and research. The alumni of the department are occupying outstanding positions and are globally known for their achievements. 


Brief Introduction to the Department :

Department of Education came into existence initially as Post Graduate Basic Training (PGBT) College Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1961. The PGBT College was also called as Government College of Education (Shaskiya Snatkottar Shiksha Mahavidhyalaya). It was a famous Teachers’ Training Institute in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh running B.Ed., M.Ed. and Diploma training programmes. On 19 June, 1967 the Madhya Pradesh government handed over this college through letter no. Trgk/67/2053 to Saugor University with all its physical and human resources and was renamed as ‘University College of Education’.


Brief Introduction of the Department 

Department of English and Other European Languages is one of the first 28 departments that came into being along with the founding of the University of Saugor. Professor S. R. Swaminathan, a theatre aficionado was the first Head of the Department. In the following years, eminent scholars like Prof. P.S. Sastri, Prof. Amaresh Datta, Prof. Mohan Lal, Prof. Mallikarjunan and Prof. R. S. Pathak joined the Department and made a distinct contribution to the development of the Department. Working by the vision of Sir Dr. Harisingh Gour, the founder of the University, the Department strives to impart open and versatile training to the students, giving them sufficient knowledge in the new and promising fields like Translation Studies, South Asian Literature, Film Studies, Science Fiction, Creative Writing, Academic Writing, Soft Skills, Text and Performance, and the like along with the mainstream Language and Literature, Indian and Western Literary Theories and the School and College/University Teaching.


Brief History

The Department of Geology had started in 1946 for teaching B.Sc. and M.Sc. Classes under the headship of Professor G. W. Chiplonkar. In the year 1956, the Department of Applied Geology started independently offering three years post graduate course leading to M.Tech. Degree (6 semesters) in Applied Geology under the headship of Professor W. D. West. After six years, both the departments (Pure and Applied Geology) were merged into the Department of Applied Geology. The Department was expanded when it enjoyed the status of a Centre of “Advanced Study in Geology” from 1963.


Introduction of the Department :

      सागर विश्वविद्यालय का हिन्दी विभाग भारत के प्रतिष्ठित विभागों में से एक रहा है। इसके संस्थापक विभागाध्यक्ष पं. आनन्दमोहन वाजपेयी थे। पं. आनन्दमोहन वाजपेयी काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय, बनारस से दीक्षित थे। बाबू श्यामसुन्दर दास और आचार्य रामचंद्र शुक्ल के सुयोग्य शिष्य के रूप में आपकी प्रतिष्ठा थी। सौष्ठववादी आलोचना के जनक आचार्य नन्ददुलारे वाजपेयी ने वर्ष 1947 में विभागाध्यक्ष के रूप में कार्य आरम्भ किया। आचार्य वाजपेयी जी का कार्यकाल हमारे हिन्दी विभाग व हिन्दी आलोचना के इतिहास में स्वर्णकाल के रूप में दर्ज है। हिन्दी की प्रतिष्ठित पत्रिका 'आलोचना' का संपादन काफी दिनों तक आचार्य नन्ददुलारे वाजपेयी के हाथों सागर से ही हुआ। आचार्य नन्ददुलारे वाजपेयी के प्रयासों और साहित्य के क्षेत्र में उनके सार्थक हस्तक्षेप से सागर का हिन्दी विभाग उनके समय में साहित्य की राजधानी बन गया था।


About the department:

The Department of History was established in1946, since the inception of the University. In the initial stages, for four years, the department conducted only intermediate and B.A. Classes under the headship of Dr. H.L. Gupta, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department. Prof. R.P. Tripathi, Vice Chancellor of Sagar University, was Honorary Professor of the Department. He took initiative to start P.G. Classes in the Department. Prof. B. N. Sharma of this Department was appointed the Vice Chancellor of Bhopal University. Three Professors of this Department Prof. H.L. Gupta, Prof. B.N. Sharma and Prof. B.B. Shrivastva served as the Dean of Social Science Faculty. Presently Prof. B.K. Shrivastava is the Head of the department.

Brief Introduction of the Department :

The Department of Adult Education (DAE), under the aegis of School of Educational Studies, came into existence on 8th September 1984 and was accorded statutory status as a full-fledged teaching department in 1997. The extension & outreach activities of the Department are mainly focused on educational intervention to meet the diversity and plurality of educational needs and to create Socio-political and cultural awareness among the community about every corner of their life. Documentation and dissemination of knowledge have always been one of the major concerns of the department. Apart from teaching and extension, the department has a doctoral research programme that is multidisciplinary in nature and method, able to relate with contemporary educational discourse.


About the Department :

The Department of Linguistics was established on 1st October, 1959 under the guidance and leadership of Prof. Babu Ram Saxena invited for the same by Pandit Dwarka Prasad Mishra, the then Vice Chancellor of this University. This University was the seventh University of India to establish the Department of Linguistics and to teach Linguistics at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Besides Prof. Babu Ram Saxena the other founder faculty members of this department were Prof. Ramesh Chandra Mahrotra and Prof. Devi Shankar Dwivedi who joined the department as lecturers. The Department of Linguistics, since its inception, has been headed by many teachers of the department. Presently, the department is under the headship of Prof. Chanda Bain, Department of Hindi. Till date more than 25 scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degrees in the different field of Linguistics. At present, the department has three Assistant Professors who joined in 2013 from the leading universities of India. Effective steps are being taken by the faculty members to strengthen teaching and conduct research in the prominent areas of Linguistics such as Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Endangered Language Studies, Language Teaching and Evaluation, and Stylistics. A sound training in Linguistics can provide good opportunities to students in the fields of accent and voice training, translation, Language planning, lexicography, speech therapy and natural language processing.etc. 


About the Department: 

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics was castablished with the very inception of the University in the year of 1946. The founder of the university and the founder vice-chancellor Dr. Harisingh Gour had himself appointed Mr. R.B. Rabugunday as the first Head of the Department. Mr. Rabugunday was a scholar of Madras University and a Wrangler of Cambridge tradition

About Department of Music

 The department started its journey as teaching of music since 1973 with one temporary staff and then as full-fledged department since Feb 1979. Vocal Tabla and Sitar was main focus of the teaching department. Several students of this department have won accolades; brought ranks in state level and National level inter university competitions / youth festivals and some students got gold medal. Performances of many students of this department were telecasted number of times on national channel of Doordarshan and also from All India Radio.


Brief Introduction of the Department :

Though the department was established in 1959, the University created an independent Department of Psychology on March 18th 1963. Dr. S. K. Saxena, Ph. D. (London), Professor of Philosophy, was the founder head of the department. Dr. Jai Prakash became the first head of the independent department. The contribution of Prof. H. S. Asthana, Prof. I. S. Muhar, Prof. A. K. Purohit, a Fulbright Fellow (Harvard University), Prof. Y. S. Vagarecha, a trained clinical psychologist, Prof. V. K. Kool, Prof. Udai Jain and Dr. B. B. Asthana has recoded in the development of the Department. Prof. V. Shriwastava (1981-2014) contributed in teaching and research in the area of social psychology and authored books and research articles. Its present activities are multifaceted and keeping pace with time. specialisation of the department are Cognitive Psychology, Positive Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology etc.
